As the second largest river in California and a popular recreational river, the Klamath river flows roughly 200 miles from Iron Gate Damn to the ocean. The river hosts populations of chinook and coho salmon as well as juvenile and adult steelhead. The juvenile steelhead, or “half pounders,” are sexually immature steelhead running between 14 and 18 inches and can be a blast on a fly rod. The mature steelhead typically run between 3 and 8 pounds. Klamath River steelhead respond well to both traditional swinging techniques as well as nymphing flashy bug and egg patterns. As far as numbers landed, this is one of the West’s best steelhead rivers.
